Dear Matt,
You’re a Maroubra local. You know our beaches. You know what they mean to this community. So I’m coming to you straight. Randwick Council is trying to put parking meters on our beaches — and against overwhelming opposition from this community are still trying to make it happen.
It’s not just my gut feel. Chris Lonergan, a highly respected research professional with over 30 years of experience major flaws in the survey’s methodology and concluded it should not be interpreted as representing the views of Randwick City Council residents. As such Council cannot credibly use the results as part of their decision-making process.
The proposal is deeply un-Australian. Charging people from outside the LGA to visit a public beach creates a two-tiered system — locals versus everyone else. That’s not who we are. It also flies directly in the face of Labor values. And the irony? The actual problem — car turnover during peak periods — is already solvable. Better enforcement of existing free time-restricted parking does the job without a single meter.
We’ve all seen what happens when meters go into coastal communities. The culture takes a hit. Small businesses suffer. Stress goes up. Cost of living goes up. The cost-benefit simply doesn’t stack up.
People are emotionally invested in this in a way I haven’t seen in years. This is your patch too. We’re asking you to pick up the phone to Mayor Parker today — and tell him to do right by his community and drop this proposal immediately.
Yours sincerely,
PS Please don’t dismiss my letter if it appears similar to others. Often-time many who care about an issue and want to make their voice heard, find it hard to have time to create an ndividual correspondence. This doesn’t lessen the sentiment behind any individual voice.
